i had been looking forward to try out volta, one of ghent’s recent rising stars in the foodie firmament, but i wasn’t prepared to love it as much as i did. my iphone snapshots don’t do the interior justice (but do check out the pics on their beautiful website), because it is way more fabulous than it looks. i even loved the gorgeous bathrooms in the basement.

we had really good cocktails in the bar on the mezzanine and later enjoyed the taster menu downstairs in the restaurant. think lots of veggies, a light and refined cuisine and the exact right portions – we left feeling fulfilled, but not stuffed. the whole experience reminded us very much of new york, as the vibe was more cozy and casual than snobby. if you’re planning a trip to ghent, this place definitely deserves to go on your list.
