it’s been a while since i’ve shared a vipp breakfast club idea, but this weekend finally presented the perfect opportunity to to make one of my all-time favorite foods, american pancakes. full disclosure – you can actually wake me up for any kind of warm dough-y dish, from beignets to crepes and waffles. but american buttermilk pancakes hold a special place in my heart because they always remind me of new york.

my father-in-law surprised me with this new york recipe book last christmas, and i absolutely love it. granted, many of the recipes are not exactly healthy fare, but i look at the pictures and i’m right there on the street corner smelling the hot dogs, or in the hotel lobby ordering a side of crispy bacon with my pancakes. i don’t need to explain to you why i always take my running shoes for a couple of laps in central park each day?

anyway, back to the pancakes. ever since moving to geneva we’ve made these quite a few times for breakfast. i love to serve them with a good helping of maple syrup and a bit of salted butter. the vipp brunch plates turned out to have the perfect shape, and we used the little ceramic espresso cups to hold the syrup because it reminds us of how they do it in our favorite new york hotels and restaurants. if you’re headed to new york any time soon, make sure you check out the blueberry pancakes at nomad, and the buttermilk pancakes at the standard – those always hit the spot.
